"Salutations. Carl G. Schmurdon here. That's S-C-H-M-U-R-D-O-N. Retired Lieutenant. I was speaking with Attorney Rice earlier, but I believe the line was lost. I told Mr. Rice that a healthy sum on money has been taken from me. It's been the largest burden of my life. I have spent the past three and a half decades avoiding confrontation because of it. My own family members, my daughter, my first and second wife and her daughter all have been after it, my money. I'm a 95-year-old man now. A retired military officer, who's been outliving a quack's diagnosis since 60. My greatest accomplishments are also my biggest foes, for it was with that diagnosis that the greed took over the people I once held dear. As I told Mr. Rice, I am in room 606 at the Waterloo Motel. That's W-A-T-E-R-L-O-O. You can contact me by dialing 805-687-6444 and then asking for room 606. Once again this is Carl G. Schumrdon. S-C-H-M-U-R-D..."
The answering machine in the empty office clicked and reset itself. Its green new-message light blinked the number 3 from 4 a.m. local time, to 8:30 when the receptionist arrived to check the messages. The first a hang-up. The next two from Carl G. Schmurdon, retired lieutenant. He wasn't a stranger to this law office, or any law office in town for that matter. He'd call annually, sometimes bi-annually and always leave the same message, the same amount of times. Carl G. Schmurdon would always get cut off, but wouldn’t call back to finish his second attempt for at least six months more.
